Acupuncture:

What is Traditional Chinese Medicine? Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a complete medical system that includes: acupuncture; Chinese herbal medicine; oriental massage; nutrition; and exercise. For more than 3000 years many cultures have benefited from this method of treating and preventing diseases. Today TCM is recognized world wide. The World Health Organization has researched and documented the effectiveness of TCM. Medical communities throughout the world are integrating this medicine into their healthcare systems. In TCM emphasis is placed upon understanding and treating the underlying cause of each individual's imbalance. This holistic approach to health not only addresses physical complaints, but also emotional, environmental and lifestyle conditions. Acupuncture is the use of very fine needles to assist the flow of the body's energy. The needles are inserted at key points on the body with little or no pain and once inserted, many patients don't feel them at all. Herbal Medicine has long been used by traditional Chinese practitioners who typically combine a number of herbs in a personalized formula. Jowanna has a keen interest and extensive experience in prescribing appropriate herbal formulas for a wide variety of ailments. Bonnie and Jowanna use Tui Na, a form of deep tissue massage, and acupressure, the holding of points. Jin Shin Do is a form of acupressure that focuses on the mind and body connection.

How does acupuncture work? TCM theory explains that pain and disease are caused by either an imbalance or a blockage of the energy (Qi) circulating through the body. In an acupuncture treatment extremely thin disposable type needles, made of surgical steel, are inserted at specific point on the body. These points are carefully selected by the acupuncturist according to the patient's signs and symptoms. Each treatment is tailored to the individual's needs. The acupuncture treatment corrects the imbalances and removes the blockages of energy (Qi), thus restoring the body to good health. Only disposable needles are used in this practice.

Why should I try acupuncture treatments? To stay healthy, we need energy to flow to all parts of our body. With our daily demands, sometimes we don't eat properly or get enough rest. This contributes to blocking our energy flow. Acupuncture treatments focus on troubled areas and help to break the blockages, return the flow of energy, and restore balance in the body.

Does acupuncture work? Throughout history, more people have been treated with acupuncture and Oriental Medicine than all other health modalities combined. In modern society traditional Chinese medicine is being used with increased frequency to compliment western medicine. .

I hate needles. Won't this hurt? Acupuncture uses very fine, disposable, filiform needles that cause little or no pain when inserted. They are very different (and much friendlier) than traditional needles used in a doctor's office, and are smaller than the pins used in sewing.

Do I need more than one treatment? Most patients require 6 to 12 treatments depending upon their condition. Chronic conditions often require a longer course of treatment. Patients often find regular "maintenance" visits healthy and enjoyable...to keep their body in balance.

How long does a treatment last? An initial visit takes about 1-1/2 hours. We do a very thorough intake and discuss what we think is going on before we start the treatment. Following visits are shorter and typically last from 45 minutes to 1 hour.

What will my family doctor say? Many Western doctors are beginning to accept acupuncture and herbal medicine as a viable alternative to be used in conjunction with their own therapies. If your doctor does not believe in acupuncture treatments, we would be willing to talk to them. We have many referrals from medical doctors!

Does my health insurance cover acupuncture? Many insurance policies do indeed cover acupuncture treatments. Check with your provider on this coverage. In many cases acupuncture will be covered if you are referred by your primary care physician. Ask!

What can Traditional Chinese Medicine help heal? The World Health Organization currently recognizes acupuncture as being effective for over 40 different conditions. Additionally, studies indicate that it can be effective for even more conditions including:
  • Women's health issues - PMS, fertility, perimenopause, menopause, endometriosis, menstrual disorders, morning sickness.
  • Emotional issues - anxiety, depression, guilt, trauma, stress.
  • Addictions - tobacco, drugs, alcohol, food.
